“I love dogs and I love painting dogs, that’s what I do. When I first met Nadia, my business was a very busy business. I literally worked every hour. I spent many hours replying to numerous enquiries and painting many lovely dog portraits.

But for all the hours that I put into my business I wasn’t earning very much money (at all!)

I had thought that I needed to be busy and that people somehow deserved my time and skills for free as I felt so flattered that they had even asked me to paint a portrait for them!

I thought it was going well as I was busy and always swamped with enquires and orders. But, financially, things were not good. In fact, they were poor, very poor.

I love my business and I’ve always loved it and feel very lucky to be able to run my own business around my family commitments. BUT because I was working so many hours on my business my work/life balance was getting hit hard.

I almost felt embarrassed to charge people as I was clearly doing something that I loved doing, so how could I charge people for me painting their dog for them, when I loved painting so much?

Another issue I struggled with was, time management.  

I’m a one-man-band and felt the pressure to be good at everything.

My biggest time draining exercise was replying to every enquiry with a personal reply, discussing processes and prices with each and every enquiry took up a big part of my day and a lot of these enquires didn’t always result in a commission.

I’d taken part in Nadia’s free challenge. I had no reservations in admitting that I needed help to grow my business, but as I wasn’t earning very much money I was worried that I couldn’t afford it.

I’d never run a business before and I really want my business to work, so I decided to take the leap.

As soon as I started working with Nadia, I made some big changes!

Nadia helped me to see that I had a huge fear of pricing and charging my worth.

One of first change I made was to double my prices (!) …. and then publishing these prices for everyone to see on my website.

At first, my constant flow of enquiries dwindled and I worried, and worried some more that my prices were far too high. I had a massive confidence crisis!

However, my commissions didn’t decrease.

I now know that in reality this reduction in enquiries was due to people being able to access the answers themselves. I was also able to filter out the time wasters. 

As a result of this simple change I’m able to spend more time actually painting, my favourite part of my work, as I had freed up time by not spending hours replying to enquires. It’s so much better.  

By not valuing my skills and treating my business like a hobby, because I loved what I was doing so much, I actually stopped myself from earning money. I priced my products low as I felt flattered that people liked my art and then spent many hours working on peoples commissioned bespoke artwork for very little money.

I feel 100 times happier at where my business is now and I feel positive about the ways to take it to the next level.

I still have a long way to go to earn the amount of money that I would like but feel that this is achievable.

I’ve got a sense of confidence about my work that I certainly didn’t have before I worked with Nadia. 

Once I increased my prices and then secured the first few commissions at the new prices was the greatest feeling, it still is!

I always have a little wobble when I’m asked about pricing, but by having my prices on my website I have somewhere to direct people to without having to talk numbers!

I love working with Nadia and the other Profiteroles. It is so re-assuring to know that if I have a wobble I can post a question in the Profit Pack Facebook group and I always get awesome support and feedback. Nadia’s advice is always spot-on and makes so much sense.

Working on my own can be daunting sometimes especially as I have no experience of running a business. Knowing that I only have to ask my question is a huge comfort-blanket for me.

It also helps knowing that other entrepreneurs have the occasional bad day too, if I thought everyone was winning on a daily basis I’d feel like a proper failure! We are only human and by sharing our ups and downs helps enormously.

I have made lots of new friends, some of which I have been lucky enough to work with too. I think we have such an eclectic group of skilled people in the Profit Pack that there is always someone to answer questions.

I’ve learned a huge lesson about the importance of charging my worth and treating my business as a business so I can provide for my family. If I spend all day (and night) painting for other people and not charging enough I’m not only not making any money I’m also missing special time with my lush family!

My advice for other budding entrepreneurs is to always be yourself, be true to yourself and your beliefs and do what you love.

Pushing myself out of my comfort zone terrifies me, but I know I can do it with Nadia’s awesome support!

My plans for the future?

I’m creating a line of greetings cards that feature my watercolour dog portraits along side quirky quotes. I’m going to be brave and put on my big girls pants and get out there… I’m going to make contact with people and potential stockists and get Dotty Dog Art out to a much wider audience!”

“I don’t even know how I came across Nadia, it may have been a Facebook ad… but, I liked the way she spoke about business and the things she stood for. So, I decided, for the first time ever, to actually get some help and take the first step. 

I had plenty of experience running someone else’s business, in my day job, but I hadn’t tried anything else out before. I was just spending my evenings hanging out and wasting time on the internet/

When I first joined Nadia’s tribe I was desperate to make some changes in my life! I always knew I wanted to have a business and I had an idea, but I hadn’t even started executing it yet – so really, when I first joined up – I had no business to speak of.

All I had was an an idea, which I was very passionate about, but in working with Nadia we soon realised that it was going to be a huge uphill struggle. 

I really wanted to have a business that was going to let me follow my dreams, where people would pay for my services, and it soon became clear that my original idea was not going to do that.

I was new to it all and trying to grow a business that wasn’t going to suit my lifestyle – ever. So I decided to make a change. 

The first big change I made, whilst working with Nadia, was to stop wasting time with my current business and shut it down. Eeeek. 

Then, a couple of months later, I had the idea for a business that would be based entirely online and built on my strengths. I started my new business working as a VA with an emphasis of tech, in April, and by November it had grown so much that I was able to quit my job!  

I feel so happy that I had the confidence to make the change. I would not be singing along to songs while working from home, if I hadn’t!      

My biggest mistake was not quitting my job sooner. I could have achieved it much earlier, but I was convinced I needed to have reached the right amount of money.

As soon as I quit, I was able to put myself out there, and things started to happen really quickly. I wish I’d done it sooner.

Nowadays, my business is going really well. 

I have reached my monthly income target for the last 3 months and am now working on growing things. I’m still optimising and perfecting our processes, because some of them are not as efficient as they could be, but overall I’m happy with how things are now. I am now making everything more scalable.   

Since I started working with Nadia I have increased my income from actually making a loss to a consistent £2500 per month, quitting my job and focussing on my business full-time. I’ve even taken on 2 freelance team members!

Nadia really delivers on what she promises.

She promised me to get me to $5000 per month and I’m nearly there.

I love the regular reality checks and knowing that there is someone there I can bounce my ideas off.

Over the past few months I’ve learned to

  • believe in myself.
  • work hard.
  • not make excuses.

The art of anticipation

My love of advent calendars runs deep.

Opening that first window and taking out the tiny little chocolate – it’s one of my favourite winter moments.

Actually, scrap that, it starts with the decision about which advent calendar to buy… and then of course dropping hints to Mr F, that he really ought to go massively out of his way to buy it for me.

And then, maybe I’m a bit of a nutter, but, once the calendar of my dreams is pur-chased, I love looking longingly at it on the kitchen counter, as we inch ever closer to 1st December.

As you probably know, I do have rather a sweet tooth, so the prospect of that first treat is quite a big deal for me (!) but I think it goes beyond that… honest.

I love the counting down to Christmas, day by day. It’s so exciting.

The thought of all the lovely lights, presents, food, woolly sweaters, sparkly outfits and of course (but perhaps to a lesser extent- he he) hanging out with my family!

It’s the anticipation I like.

It’s so tantalising. (Not sure I’ve ever used that word in an email before… feeling proud)

As I was saying, it’s the anticipation.

And as the guru that is Carrie Bradshaw would say…. “So I got to thinking…”

… about business.. and about anticipation in business.

How do you use anticipation in your business?

Do you tease and tantalise (I said it again!) your people when you’re launching or counting down to something cool.

Or do you just slap it in front of them like a big ham.

Wouldn’t business and the world be a more tingly place if we made people wait a little? Dropping hints….counting down, giving a sneaky peak… waving the prospect of something fabulous to come in front of people, and then whipping it away until it’s ready to go.

In the spirit of anticipation…. I’ve got something rather fabulous coming soon. I haven’t exactly decided what it is yet, but you’re going to love it!

You may throw up in your mouth

I’m sure you’ve seen people talking about how they made multiple six figures in a matter of months. Everywhere you look online, people are sharing their successes and making it seem super easy. You know the kind of thing, right?

All that success is nice and everything, for them, but…… if you’re really honest, it’s a bit, you know… sickening. I mean, how the hell did they get there so easily, when you’re struggling?!

It’s enough to make you puke.

It’s not bloody fair!

I know how you feel. It even gets to me sometimes, especially when I’m not having the best day, or I’ve got PMS (he he) We’re only human, dammit.

The thing is, this kind of look at me I’m winning at business, and life and everything, and I have a skinny butt too, in your face, humble brag, is not the whole story.

It doesn’t reflect the blood sweat, tears, and often years and years of hard graft that went into creating that success.

That’s why I’m going to share Lauren Gayfer’s story with you.

Lauren is a super talented nutritionist and is one of my Profit Packers and has made some epic changes in her business. Success has not been easy and there have been definite highs and lows too, but Lauren has stayed focussed and on track, and hasn’t given up!

When we first met, Lauren was stuck trading time for money. She was busy, but the money she was making didn’t reflect the hard work and effort she was putting in.

“About a year ago, my business was pretty seasonal and unpredictable. Some months would be great and others very slow and there didn’t seem to be much rhyme or reason to it.

I was seeing clients one to one in a rented room, or at home, charging per session. I did have a three session consultation package which I tried to sell to most clients so I would get a bit more money up front.

But the truth was, I wasn’t making enough money.

I was really excited about making changes, I knew there was so much more I could do with my business but I didn’t know how or what. I felt very limited by my geography and by my services .

I had to make some big changes!

One of the first things Nadia helped me to do was put my prices up. Eeek.

Once we’d done that she persuaded me to stop the one off sessions and offer only packages.

I finally felt valued, and if people weren’t prepared to pay for my expertise in improving their health, then I was happy to stop bending over backwards for them.

Once I felt comfortable with my new prices, I started thinking about group programmes so I could leverage my time and boost my profits.

I had been doing day retreats with a yoga instructor and those months were always more profitable. Of course it makes sense to sell one thing to lots of people.

So, I put together a free online 7 day challenge with the intention of moving these people on to a paid 28 programme.

I’m not gonna lie, It did take a bit of blood, sweat and tears, but I ran the programme and got a good number of people signed up to it!

I’ve now launched a monthly membership club which I am testing out on a small number of people (mostly people who have followed me through my challenge and programme) and I am hoping to grow this in 2017 once I feel happy with the format and the structure.

My people have been asking me for meal plans for years but for various reasons I’ve not delivered this. Now I have the chance to do this with my membership club and give people what they really want!

It’s been quite a year, for me and my business! Making all these changes has pushed me harder than I thought it would and it’s also been a massive learning curve.

I’ve learnt that I do not need to push myself quite so hard. I can go at my own pace and no-one’s going to know the difference.

I’ve made some mistakes but they’ve only been learning experiences. I know what I am good at and the process of taking people through journey has won me a few evangelists for my business which is amazing.

Next year is going to be about focus. I want to get the membership club right and in a place where members are getting what they need, good value, and I’m not working myself into the ground. I have learnt a huge amount this year and I am very excited about the future of my business!

As you can see, Lauren has moved her business forwards dramatically, but it has taken a year of hard work.

It didn’t just magically happen!

Because Lauren trusted me and was prepared to put the work in and stay focussed on her goal she’s ben able to achieve amazing results for herself and her family.
